Rumors abound about the circumstances surrounding combat gear missing from a Marine Corps Base.

Marines with the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, at Camp Lejeune, N.C., lost two M4 service rifles and a flak jacket during a training exercise on base Dec. 20, Marine officials confirmed.

Junior Marines and internet memes have been putting out conflicting information about what happened — leading many to believe that holiday leave has been canceled for all of the Marines at the base.

However, Marine officials confirmed those who had leave approved were allowed to go, and the base was not locked down.

First Lt. Dan Linfante, a Marine spokesman, confirmed that Marines are not being denied leave as a result of this incident, in a statement.

“Leave is an important benefit afforded to all Marines, in particular during the holiday season,” he said, regarding the rumors.
