A US Marine Gunnery Sergeant assigned to a Japan-based Marine air tanker squadron was found dead in his home last week, according to a USMC spokesman.
GySgt Efrain Martinez Jr., of Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron was found dead in his on-base home on November 26.
According to Stars and Stripes, the 34-year-old KC-130 mechanic was an Iraq and Afghanistan veteran who joined the Marines in 2002, and even served a three-year stint as a drill instructor.
“VMGR-152 is deeply saddened by Gunnery Sgt. Martinez’ passing,” VMGR-152 commander Lt. Col. Mitchell T. Maury said in a statement Monday. “He was a Marines’ Marine, and his legacy will carry on for years to come. The entire squadron mourns his loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and the multitude of Marines he has positively impacted throughout his career.”
His death is currently under investigation.
He is survived by a wife and four children, and a memorial service was held last Wednesday in his honor.
