A Texas journalist and former US Marine officer who was abducted over five years ago is reportedly alive and being held in Syria, according to US officials.

Austin Tice, a former US Marine Captain who embedded with the Free Syrian Army half a decade ago, is believed to have been kidnapped in 2012 while reporting in Damascus.

It was the summer before his final year at Georgetown Law School, that he chose to go to Syria as a Freelance Journalist to report on the conflict there.

Three days before his capture, he celebrated his 31st birthday at a FSA compound, sharing details about the event on Twitter.

“Spent the day at an FSA [Free Syrian Army] pool party with music by @taylorswift13. They even brought me whiskey. Hands down, best birthday ever,” he tweeted.

One month later, camera phone footage emerged of him being dragged from a vehicle by armed men while saying, “Oh, Jesus. Oh, Jesus,” in Arabic.

According to the New York Post, US Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs Robert O’Brien told the press on Tuesday that investigators have “every reason to believe” that Tice is still alive, and that President Trump is regularly briefed on the situation.
